Nitin Gadkari
Updated

Nitin Jairam Gadkari was born in Nagpur in May 1957 to Jairam Ramchandra Gadkari and Bhanutai Jairam Gadkari. His Lok Sabha biography records commerce and law qualifications from Nagpur institutions. He married Kanchan in December 1984, and they have two sons and a daughter. He entered public life through student and youth organisations, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the BJP’s youth wing.
Gadkari’s early legislative career was in the Maharashtra Legislative Council. He served as the state’s Public Works Minister from 1995 to 1999 and later as Leader of the Opposition in the Council between 1999 and 2005. The ministry’s biographical account also records his presidency of the Maharashtra BJP before his elevation to the national party leadership in 2009. These roles preceded his election to the Lok Sabha.
Gadkari was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Nagpur in 2014 and was re-elected in 2019 and 2024. He joined the Union cabinet in May 2014, holding Road Transport and Highways alongside Shipping. His later assignments included Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. The Lok Sabha records that the latter portfolio ran from May 2019 to July 2021.
Road Transport and Highways has remained Gadkari’s principal Union portfolio across the governments formed in 2014, 2019 and 2024. The current list issued by the Prime Minister’s Office continues to place him in charge of that ministry. His background in transport administration also includes the Maharashtra Public Works Department. His parliamentary biography distinguishes this continuing road transport role from the other Union ministries he held for shorter periods.
