Early life and education

Nirmala Sitharaman was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, in August 1959. Her official biographies name her parents as Narayanan Sitharaman and Savitri. She studied at Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College in Tiruchirappalli and Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. The government and parliamentary directories record an M.A. in economics and an M.Phil. She married economist Parakala Prabhakar in 1986, and the Rajya Sabha directory records one daughter.

Public life and party roles

Sitharaman served as a member of the National Commission for Women between 2003 and 2005. Her later work included membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s National Executive from 2008 and service as a national spokesperson between 2010 and 2014. These assignments preceded her entry into the Union government and Parliament. In 2014 she was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh, before subsequently representing Karnataka.

Commerce and Defence

Sitharaman joined the Union government in May 2014 as a Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs, while also holding independent charge of Commerce and Industry. Her commerce tenure continued until September 2017, when she became Defence Minister. She held the Defence portfolio until May 2019. Her parliamentary record lists official visits for defence discussions and regional meetings as part of her work in that ministry.

Finance and Corporate Affairs

Sitharaman became Finance Minister and Corporate Affairs Minister on 30 May 2019. She retained both portfolios in the government formed after the 2024 general election; the Department of Expenditure records the renewed allocation from 10 June 2024.
