About
Devendra Fadnavis is Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a Bharatiya Janata Party politician representing Nagpur South West in the state assembly. He returned as Chief Minister on 5 December 2024 after earlier service as Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Mayor of Nagpur.
Background and education

Fadnavis was born on 22 July 1970 and comes from Nagpur. His biographical account records a law degree from Nagpur University, postgraduate study in business management and a diploma in project management from DSE Berlin. His mother is Sarita Fadnavis. He is married to banker and social worker Amruta Fadnavis, and their daughter is Divija. His public career began in municipal politics.

Nagpur and the state legislature

Fadnavis was elected to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation in 1992. The corporation’s roster records two consecutive mayoral terms from March 1997 to February 1999. He entered the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1999 and won Nagpur South West again in 2024. Within the BJP, his organisational posts included work in the youth wing and the presidency of the Maharashtra party organisation before his service in the state executive.

Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister

Fadnavis served as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister during 2014–2019 and briefly again in 2019. He subsequently led the opposition in the state assembly before serving as Deputy Chief Minister from 2022 to 2024. On 5 December 2024 he took the oath as Chief Minister for a third time. Current Maharashtra government directories continue to identify him as the state’s Chief Minister.

Government work and public recognition

His biographical account associates his earlier chief ministerial period with the Jalyukt Shivar water-conservation programme, the Aaple Sarkar public-grievance platform and work on transport infrastructure. These initiatives are recorded as areas of government activity without adopting promotional claims about their effects. The same account records his Nag Bhushan award in 2016 and recognition by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association for his legislative work.
