About
Arvind Kejriwal is national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party and a former Chief Minister of Delhi. A former Indian Revenue Service officer, he became known for right-to-information activism before entering electoral politics.
Early life and education

Kejriwal was born on 16 August 1968 in Siwani, Haryana. His parents are Govind Ram Kejriwal and Geeta Devi. He graduated in mechanical engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1989 and subsequently joined the Indian Revenue Service. He married Sunita Kejriwal, and they have a daughter and a son. His Delhi Assembly biography records his professional background in the Income Tax Department.

Transparency and right-to-information work

Before party politics, Kejriwal worked through Parivartan on public services and transparency. The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation describes campaigns involving taxation, electricity, subsidised food distribution and public works. Residents used information obtained from government records to examine local projects and organise public hearings. In 2006, the foundation gave him its award for Emergent Leadership for his role in the grassroots right-to-information movement.

Party formation and Delhi government

Kejriwal was involved in the India Against Corruption movement before the formation of the Aam Aadmi Party in 2012. He won the New Delhi assembly constituency in 2013, defeating Sheila Dikshit, and first became Chief Minister on 28 December 2013. He took the oath again on 14 February 2015 and 16 February 2020. His public career subsequently included leadership of AAP as its national convenor.

Public services and later politics

AAP associates Kejriwal’s periods in government with electricity and water subsidies, women’s bus travel and support for senior citizens’ pilgrimages. These are descriptions of the party’s programme rather than assessments of their outcomes. His official party biography now describes the chief ministerial role in the past tense and identifies his continuing office as national convenor. He lost New Delhi in the 2025 assembly election.
